Gone Fishing Again

We got zero bites for the evening but had fun anyway! And now, we have our fishing licenses so we can do it legally!

Time To Sit Back & Weed...

The hanging baskets with our herbs and spinach.

Got about 4 inches of grass clippings put down over the whole bed.  It helps with weeds and also composts itself during the season adding nutrients to the soil.  It also increases the population of bugs tho, so that needs to be managed a bit more closely.

Same with the two raised beds.

The Final Track Meet of the 2022 Season

The 2022 boys track season was a little less than stellar this year. We had some key injuries to start with, but you can have those pretty much any year. What really sucked was that after the first track meet held in Indianola during a rare day of beautiful weather, the next 3 meets were cancelled due to weather related reasons.

We finally had a meet at Waukee Northwest, during a somewhat cold, windy, and occasionally rainy day.  Not ideal, but at least we had one!

Then last Saturday, we had the Jr. High State track meet in Ankeny.  It was a nice, hot & dry day complete with sunburns and lots of water!

So this past Thursday night,  Southeast Polk hosted our home meet and quite frankly,  I along with several other's were surprised with how many teams were there!

I sat in the bleachers for just a few minutes shy of 4 hours with the sun burning the other side (the back) of my neck and head!

Happy to say, SEP won the meet 161 - 87 (over second place) so at least we got to end the season on a high note for these lads who will be high school Freshman the next time they compete.

My pictures suck because Caleb didn't run until very late in the day and both races had him on the opposite side of the field from where we were sitting.  That's him out in the group of yellow shirts at the 45 yard line on the football field.

One of his buddies who decided the bench wasn't good enough!  lol   I took this picture since I knew Caleb would think it was funny.  He did not let me down.

And what's better?  Rob joined us for this meet and the guy in the blue shirt and hat behind Rob is Caleb's sponsor for confirmation earlier this Spring.  He showed up to support our church kids and he stayed for the whole dang thing!

The only action shot that I got.  Caleb, with his arm back, taking the baton hand-off from Abraham.

That's a wrap for sports until football season starts!

2022 Jr. High State Track Meet

SEP boys stretching and warming up.

My nephew Samuel throwing the shot put.

Caleb getting ready for his first relay.

It's hard to see, but in lane 7 is Lucas handing the baton off to Caleb (they're in yellow).

My nephew Samuel again.

Caleb in his final race.

Overall, the 8th graders (Caleb's team) came in 3rd this year behind two teams from Waukee.  Still a good job and I'm proud of them!

2022 Waukee North Track Meet

Waukee Northwest was supposed to be Caleb's 5th track meet but due to our lovely Spring weather (aka, late Winter 2.1) it only qualifies as his second.  The high temp while we were there was 48F degrees, with a stiff breeze and occasional rainfall.  It was delightful!

No matter, the lad only runs in two races as they have a large team and it is what it is.  Thankfully, his races are right in the middle of the meet, separated by only one race.  That is quite handy for days like this one where I was froze to the bone by the time we left.

This coming Saturday, May 7th is the state tournament and we're hoping for a sunny day with little wind.  The temp can be whatever as long as those first two qualifiers are met!  lol

Like I have any say...   on to pictures from Waukee NW.

That's the lad in the middle of the picture in the yellow shirt with black shorts.  He's getting ready for his first race, a relay, after standing/sitting around for the previous hour.

He's in position 2, with Lucas starting things off and handing the baton to Caleb.  That's Caleb hitting the straightaway in the lead.

That's a better shot of the difference between 1st & 2nd place.

Now, I'm not sure what happened but (and I know it's nearly impossible to see!) the SEP (Caleb's team) is about to run out of the left side of the pic and the 2nd place lad is just running into the right side of the pic.

A little better evidence of the distance...  That's Caleb's teammate on the right side with the 2nd place lad not out of the corner yet.

They won that race by just shy of 13 seconds.

The second relay didn't quite go as swimmingly.  That's Caleb in 3rd place.

The 4th dude on his team closed the gap a bit but SEP (that's Southeast Polk, in the event anyone is wondering) finished 3rd in his second race.

Overall,  SEP won the meet with a total of 135 points with Waukee NW coming in 2nd with 118 points.

Hopefully we have a good state tourney on Saturday and I'll post more pics at that time.
