Road Trip, Part 1: Decorah Ice Cave

We decided to "day trip" to Decorah, IA. over the 5-day Fourth of July weekend.  It did NOT disappoint!

We had driven up to Crystal Lake to spend the day with JB and see fireworks as they have some of the best in the state, if not THE best.  Unfortunately, a line of thunderstorms developed around 4pm to the Southwest of town canceling the parade and the fireworks until Friday.

While disappointing, it is completely understandable and frankly, didn't matter much to the rest of our weekend.

So July 5th, we got up, made a big breakfast and hit the road leaving the ghastly beast, Juno, behind to spend the day with Grandpa.  They had a blast taking naps and golf cart rides!

We had a blast in Decorah and it started at the Ice Cave.

The road was closed but the cave was open, so park the vehicle and do a short 1/4 mile hike to get to the cave.  The bluffs on the left, and a steep drop down to the river on the right, made the walk beautiful!

Kinda self-explanatory, but Robby wasn't too keen on standing around looking at this because it looks like it could let loose at any second even though it's probably looked like this for 100+ years.

A couple of strapping young lads dressing up the sign!

This is where I stopped.  It's a the entrance of the cave and it's pretty narrow (I am not!) and I would have to crouch at the knees to get in.  Not a great combo after a recent back surgery.

Inside the cave.  Robby took my phone in for the flashlight and mom was in charge of taking pictures.

My flashlight on my phone is on a timer.  It shut off and Robby's trying to figure out how to get it back on.  It's that whole, "give a man a fish, feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime." thing.

My heart be still...  they are beautiful!

Near the entrance to the cave looking straight up.

That wraps up adventure #1!
